He used to text me all the time....hes soooo confusing?

Sounds to me like he meant what he said when he told you he just wanted to be friends. A lot of people who are in relationships that end badly are very vulnerable and weak and I'm sure he does like spending time with you but maybe he realized he's moving too fast and hes not ready for a relationship yet and doesn't want to hurt you in the process cause he knows that you like him more than a friend. I would give it some time and just be friends with him and see what happens from there, but like I said he probably still needs time.
