2001 BMW 325ci Catalyc converter?

I have 2001 bmw 325 ci and my mechanic said that the diagnostics chows that the catalyc converter should be changed, he said that the aprt would cost about 2000$ and the labor about 400. Anybody knows what a catalyc does and where I can buy it?
